Hughes, Mavis V. L. was born in July 1919 in Witney, Oxfordshire, Daughter of Albert James Hughes and Sarah Ellen Whitley. She married (1)Leslie G. Mercier in 1940 in Ploughley, Oxfordshire; (2)Arthur J. Blackman in 1946 in Ploughley, Oxfordshire. She lived at Adlestrop Lodge.
"[Mavis] lived at the Lodge, and had her birthday in July and our paths hadn't crossed before. We quickly became fast friends, agreeing on everything. Play times at school wasn't enough, we soon wanted to spend Saturdays and holidays together. Sometimes her big brother, Eric, would bring her on his bike to our house, but more often I was taken to the Lodge and the two of us played outdoors as happy as the day was long. Those days Eric rode me home on the bar of his bike. It was a perfect friendship but had to end when Mavis's parents moved. He was the groom at Adlestrop House and I never knew why he left. I only knew my best friend was gone. It would be years, if ever, before I had another of the same calibre".- R. Bauchman: op: Adlestrop Revisited, 2002.
