"One daughter, Clara [Caroline], went mad when she was out at service. She was brought home and it took four women to hold her down. My mother suggested getting her into an Asylum, but there came the plaintive reply that she should never leave her home until she went to Heaven. Howes, Christopher Evangel was born 25 December 1866 in Adlestrop. Son of William(ii) Howes and Mary(i) Bond. He married (1)Rhoda Crouch Baker in Ticehurst, Sussex in 1893; (2)Esther Davison in Tynemouth, Northumberland in 1907. He appears on the 1871 & 1881 censuses for Adlestrop; 1891 for Wadhurst, Sussex; 1901 for Ticehurst, Sussex; 1911 for Faversham, Kent. He was a gardener. He died in Aldershot, Hampshire in 1946.

"Christopher, their eldest son, is a tall boy 'of his age.' He is Alice's godson, and was called Christopher because he was born on Christmas Day. He is not a bad boy in school, but has no courage for his lessons. He is easily moved to tears and will often say stupid things. In repeating the parable of the hundred sheep, for instance, he said, 'There is joy in the presence of the Angels of God over one sinner that repenteth more than over ninety and nine just persons in the wilderness.' "The Father (William(ii) Howes) is the Clerk, and no one would doubt his being so who sees him in his full black clothes and white choker on a Sunday. He is a worthy man, but wedded to his old ways of doing things, which you cannot bring him to change. In the winter, for instance, he will not put candles in the pulpit at the beginning of the service but, before the sermon, will strike a match behind his clerk's desk and walk solemnly up in front of my Father with two lighted ends of candles, which he places in the sconces. One Sunday, when my Father was pleased with our singing of a special anthem, which we sometimes attempted, he asked us after the service to sing it again.
