"The opposite door in the porchway brings one into the front room of the Miss Nashes' house, which has a fragrance of musk about it. Miss Ann[(ii) Nash], the elder of the two, is exceedingly plain, but has a sweet voice. She is a dressmaker and patronized by some of the neighbouring gentry. Her sister, Catherine, has weak eyes, and for some years has enjoyed indifferent health. When you ask her how she feels, she immediately begins to cry, and 'Oh, she feels so weak 'um that she feels sometimes as though she could sink through her bed: but won't you take a chair, 'um...?' When she can bring herself to take a walk, she puts on a respirator, two veils and a large shady hat, and carries a high stick. 'Quite enough to scare anyone,' so Miss B[anner] declares. Indoors she wears a tight-fitting black cap. The two good ladies keep a little shop, and their high charging seems, I think, both to themselves and others to add to their worthiness." - R.E.Cholmondeley: Adlestrop: It's cottages and their inhabitants 1876-77.

"The Nashes [Thomas(ii) and Diana Purnell] have been long in the Village. He is a large man with a whimsical face and reddish hair. His nickname, 'Strong Man Nash,' still clings to him in his old age. Where he excels is in shearing sheep, and Mrs Nash sees after the poultry at one of the farms. They often have a smart niece, Sarah Ann, staying with them, whose parents keep an Inn called 'The Cart and Horses' at Birmingham. She comes to Adlestrop with grand stories about her home, and would like people to believe that it is as large as our Rectory. She helps her Aunt with her poultry accounts but, with all her finery, proves herself a very poor scholar, writing her aunt's name Dinah [sic] as 'Dianah' and spelling fowls 'fowels.' The Nashes take much pride in their garden, and they have lumps of green glass on their window sill." - R.E.Cholmondeley: Adlestrop: It's cottages and their inhabitants 1876-77.
